Glossary

A - E

A
Afferent (Sensory) fibers: (peripheral nervous system) carry impulses away from receptor organs to the central nervous system
C

Central Nervous System: The brain and spinal cord together make up the central nervous system.

D
Diabetic Neuropathy: A complication of Diabetes melitus, in which the peripheral nerves are affected. It involves both sensory and motor nerve fibres, but predominantly the former. Diabetic neuropathy is primarily due to metabolic imbalance, and secondarily to nerve compression.
E
Efferent (Motor) fibers: carry impulses from the central nervous system to effector organs (eg. muscles).
Endoneurium: The connective tissue framework that surrounds the nerve fibres.
Epineurium: The nerve sheath
